4 Nourishing DIY Egg Hair Mask Recipes

1. Egg and Honey Hair Mask

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tbsp of honey
  • 2 tbsp of olive oil

How to prepare and use an egg mask for hair

  • In a clean bowl, mix the egg with honey until well combined.
  • Add the warm Olive oil into the egg and honey mixture. Mix until well combined to form a egg mask
  • Apply generously on your hair making sure it covers both the scalp and hair strands.
  • Cover and let it sit for approximately 20 minutes.
  • Proceed to rinse out the egg mask with cold water. Please note that rinsing out hair with hot water will clump the egg and as a result, the hair will need extra washes to completely remove the egg mask.
  • Once the mask is completely removed, go ahead to shampoo and condition hair.

(The mixture will typically have a noticeable egg scent which you can decide to mask by adding Lemon or orange zest/peels or adding an essential oil such as lavender. )

Adding honey to the egg hair mask increases cell growth in the scalp contributing to hair growth.

Additionally, honey contains moisturizing properties making it great for restoring moisture and shine, acting as a natural conditioning treatment.

Honey also has anti-inflammatory properties that are great in healing certain skin illnesses that affect the scalp such as eczema.

Olive oil, on the other hand, is well known for its nourishing and intense moisturizing properties. It softens the outer cuticle of hair strands making the hair soft and strong.

1.  Egg and Coconut Oil Hair Mask

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsp of coconut oil. Unrefined coconut oil is preferred for best results.
  • 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar
  • 4 tbsp water

How to prepare and use on hair

  • Apply the mask on damp hair. Cover and leave it in for 20 – 30 minutes and proceed to rinse it off thoroughly with cold water.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is known to have acidic properties which work to restore shine and moisture.

Using vinegar, therefore, restores the hair and scalp`s pH balance contributing to healthier hair.

Its antimicrobial properties also help in healing several hair and scalp problems which include itchiness and infections.

Coconut oil on the other hand is a great addition for any type of hair mask. It is known to reduce protein loss in hair due to its ease in being absorbed by the hair. It also works great as a moisturizer, for sun protection, and in treating dandruff.

2. Banana and Egg Mask

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 ripe bananas.

How to prepare and use on hair

  • Use a fork to mash the bananas and mix with the eggs until they form a fine paste. Add in the eggs and mix until well combined.
  • Alternatively, you can opt to blend both ingredients.
  • Apply the mask on damp hair. Cover and leave it in for 20 – 30 minutes and proceed to rinse it off thoroughly with cold water.

Bananas contain both nutritional and chemical properties that are highly beneficial for hair. Silica, for instance, is a mineral element present in bananas that works great for growing strong and thick hair.

Applying banana to hair is a great way to tame frizz in hair making it a very popular ingredient for conditioning treatments.

Additionally, banana is also used as a remedy for dandruff. It restores moisture whose lack is a common reason for dandruff formation.

Its antibacterial properties reduce bacteria in the scalp that cause the formation of dandruff. Bananas in masks cause hair growth over time due to their antioxidant properties which strengthen hair follicles. [1]

The protein content in yogurt is believed to strengthen hair improving its health.

Lactic acid, another ingredient in yogurt is known to be great in cleaning the scalp and removing dead cells.

Although there is minimal scientific evidence to support yogurt as a beneficial hair ingredient, yogurt has culturally been used to soften hair, reduce dandruff formation, moisturize, cleanse and strengthen hair.

Benefits of Using an Egg Mask on Your Hair

1.  Promotes hair growth

Egg yolk contains vitamins that nourish the scalp and strands. As a result, the hair grow stronger and healthier.

It also makes the hair less susceptible to breaking.

The protein element in egg white also contributes to hair growth by building hair strands largely containing keratin which is a type of protein.

2. Nourishes and strengthens hair strands

The proteins in egg white are important in maintaining hair as well as body tissues.

Since a hair strand is largely made up of protein, adding protein from egg whites will strengthen hair, reducing breakage and thus contributing to healthy and strong hair.

Reduced protein in hair is known to cause brittle hair that is prone to breakage.

3. Moisturizes the hair

Egg yolk contains a fat known as lecithin that is good in moisturizing hair. This component of egg makes it very popular in hair products as a result of the specific hair oil.

4. Deep conditions the hair

The presence of protein, healthy oils, and vitamin components in eggs makes it very nourishing for hair and therefore perfect for deep conditioning.

Most deep conditioning treatments are protein-based therefore egg white is beneficial in increasing the protein content.

5. Cleans the scalp

It is believed that egg whites contain specific enzymes which work to remove build-up on scalps. Consequently, egg yolk comes highly recommended to people with oily hair to ease cleaning.
