Fenugreek has been used for decades as a natural hair remedy because of benefits such as preventing dandruff, hair loss, hair thinning and promoting growth.
It tops the charts as one of the most effective herbs for promoting healthy hair growth.
In this article we will be looking into 6 known benefits of Fenugreek on hair. We will also share some simple Fenugreek hair mask and hair rinse recipes for you to try at home.
Fenugreek Benefits for Hair
1. Promotes Healthy Hair Growth
Fenugreek is packed with several vitamins and minerals all great for promoting hair growth as shown below:
- Fenugreek is packed with Vitamin A, B, C & K. Vitamin A is known to promote production of sebum. Sebum is a natural oil produced by the body to moisturize and protect the hair.
- Contains about 28% protein content [1]. This makes it great in promoting healthy hair growth as hair made up of proteins.
- Powerful antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties that maintain a healthy scalp hence promoting healthy hair growth.
- Contains a large amount of lecithin which is responsible for hydrating and strengthen the roots and hair follicles.
2. Softens and Conditions the Hair
Fenugreek contains mucilaginous fiber that is great in absorbing moisture and creating a moisture barrier that conditions the hair and makes the hair softer. [2]
If my hair could speak, it certainly can testify to the number of times it has been soaked in a yellowish concoction containing Fenugreek.
It’s one the few herbs that I have consistently used throughout my natural hair care journey right until I installed sisterlocks.
One thing I can say for sure about Fenugreek is that it distinctively leaves my hair feeling very soft, and each strand springing back into its curly nature and easily getting detangled.
Here is a simple conditioning mask you can make using Fenugreek:
Ingredients
- 4 tbsp Fenugreek Powder
- 1 Avocado
- 1 cup Aloe Vera Juice
- 2 tsp Olive Oil
Method
- Blend all the ingredients into a very fine paste to avoid residue in the hair. Strain the paste through a large sieve to remove the large particles.
- Apply the paste on your hair starting from the roots. Ensure there is good coverage.
- Cover your head with a plastic cap and put a warm towel over the cap. This will promote absorption of all the nutrients from the mixture.
- Leave in the mask for 30 – 45 minutes
- Proceed to rinse off the mask thoroughly with cold water
3. Strengthens and Revives Damaged Hair
Whilst research on the efficacy of Fenugreek on reviving damaged hair is limited, there is one study that was conducted by (Schulz C.Bielfedt,2006) that suggest some validity to these claims.
This research involved 60 volunteers, who ingested capsules containing fenugreek extract and other micronutrients twice a day for 6 months.
After every 2 months, the researchers examined the participants after every 2 months to assess signs of hair growth.
At the end of the 6 months, 83% of the participants had a great and noticeable difference in hair, volume and thickness. There was also a significant reduction in hair shedding.
Also, as a great source of protein and amino acids, Fenugreek is great for repairing a damaged hair shaft.
4. May Prevent Hair Loss
Some studies have also shown that Fenugreek may slow down the ability of DHT (dihydrotestostretone) to attach to hair follicles. [3]
DHT is a hormone that if in excess may interfere with the hair’s growth cycle by shrinking and shortening it thus making it easier for hair to fall.
As only few studies have been done, more data and evidence is needed to conclude the effectiveness of fenugreek on hair loss.
5. Prevents Dandruff and Other Scalp Conditions

Research shows that Fenugreek contain a unique composition of plant compounds such as flavonoids and saponins.
These compounds may induce new growth due to their anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties. [2]
A quick and easy way I use Fenugreek for dandruff is by making a hair rinse from the Fenugreek seeds.
How to prepare a Fenugreek Dandruff hair rinse
Ingredients
- 1 cup of Fenugreek seeds
- 2-3 drops Peppermint oil
Method
- Clean the seeds and soak them overnight
- Alternatively, if you want to use the rinse immediately, boil the seeds for 30 minutes and let it cool
- Add peppermint oil
- Cleanse your scalp with a conditioning shampoo
- Proceed to rinse your hair using the Fenugreek water
6. May Prevent Premature Grey Hair
Some claims have been made regarding Fenugreeks ability to prevent premature greying of hair. Whilst scientists are still not exactly sure why some people go grey early, what they know for sure is that a deficiency in Vitamins B-12 can cause premature grey hair.
Given that Fenugreek is a rich source of Vitamins B and potassium, it may potentially be a good way for you to ensure you keep the greys away for as long as possible.
