In this article, we are going to look at Ginseng benefits for hair and how to use it for hair growth.

The Ginseng plant has its origin in Far East Asia and North America.

There are different species of Ginseng, the most popular ones are the Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng) and the American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius).

The part of the plant used is the roots which are fork shaped and resemble the human body in shape.

Is Ginseng Good For Your Hair?

Ginseng is good for hair because it has several benefits including nourishing the hair, promoting hair growth and treating common scalp conditions.

Among other benefits, Ginseng has the ability to reduce stress levels and promote blood circulation on your scalp which promote hair growth.

Here are the full benefits of Ginseng for hair;

#1. Stimulates Hair Growth

A 2021 study showed that Ginseng can effectively promote hair growth by inducing early transition from telogen to anagen phase. [1]

It also increases the density and bulb diameter of hair follicles.

Ginseng has components called ginsenosides. These active components have anti-oxidation properties that reverse the effects of exposing hair to the sun’s Ultra Violet (UV) rays.[2]

When hair is exposed to UV rays, there is damage of the hair shaft, and the growth cycle is altered with  by affecting keratinocyte and dermal papilla growth.

Keratinocytes protect the hair and skin by forming a tight barrier preventing foreign substances from entering the body, and minimize the loss of moisture and heat.

Dermal papilla on the other hand contains mesenchymal cells whose main role is to regulate hair growth.

Therefore, using ginseng introduces its active components to your hair giving it strength and reversing the effects of UV rays thus promoting hair growth.

#2. Treats dandruff

Ginseng contains an antibacterial component called Saponin.

Saponin helps in combatting dandruff and prevent its reoccurrence on your scalp. As a result, your hair ends up flake free and clean.

#3. Promotes Scalp Health

Ginseng has been proven to improve blood circulation to the scalp.

Good blood circulation keeps the hair follicles healthy and strong as they are receiving adequate oxygen and nutrients needed.

#4. May Reduces Hair Thinning

Ginseng ginsenosides have anti-inflammatory and antiallergic effects on your hair.

Research has shown that due to these properties of ginseng, using it on hair significantly improved your hair density and hair thickness.

#5. May Reduce Hair Loss

Alopecia is a condition where one has progressive hair loss.

The red ginseng has properties that inhibits the activity of 5 alpha (5α-) reductase preventing the development of alopecia, therefore enhancing hair growth. [3]

The 5α- dihydrotestosterone (DHT) androgen, a metabolite of testosterone plays a role in the altering of the hair cycle.

Ginseng also has anti-inflammatory properties that help decrease the component TGF-β1.

This component is responsible for hair loss as it induces the last hair phase, exogen, where hair falls off.

The anti-inflammatory properties of ginseng promote more of the growth phase and less of the exogen phase giving your hair a healthy growth cycle and promoting hair growth.
