Really, what does 4C hair need? Truth be told, 4C hair simply needs to be moisturized and mostly left alone.

I have 4C hair, and I have been natural since 2015. If you haven’t already noticed, I have done tons of research on 4C hair to not only learn how to take good care of my hair but also to take care of my children’s hair.

Based on my experience and research, I will share the most important things I have learned about what 4C hair needs to grow.

In summary, 4C hair needs:

  1. Moisture is absolutely everything you need for 4C hair. 4C tends to dry out quickly due to the curl pattern; therefore, moisture should be at the top of your list for 4C hair needs.
  2. Low Manipulation. Leave your 4C hair alone; over-manipulation leads to dryness and breakage.
  3. Regular deep conditioning – Yes, you need to have a deep conditioning schedule to restore moisture and repair any damage to your hair.
  4. A proper diet – Focus on getting the right nutrients that your hair needs to thrive
  5. Proper scalp care is key to growing healthy 4C hair
  6. Gentle products that nourish and moisturize the hair

With the summary out of the way, let us get into the details of the key things that 4C hair needs:

1. 4C Hair Needs Moisture

At the core of 4C hair care is moisture. Dry 4C hair is prone to breakage. The tight 4C curls tend to dry quickly; therefore, prioritizing moisture is paramount to ensure the hair remains hydrated and supple.

How to Moisturize 4C Hair

To effectively moisturize 4C hair, consider using water-based leave-in conditioners, creams, or natural oils like Shea Butter and Coconut oil.

When moisturizing, apply your products generously, focusing on the ends as you work your way up to the roots.

Depending on your hair porosity type, you can either use the LOC method (Liquid, Oil, Cream) or LCO method (Liquid, Cream, Oil) to effectively seal in moisture.

How often to moisturize?

4C hair benefits from regular moisturization. Depending on your hair’s needs, aim to moisturize every 1-2 days or as necessary. Pay attention to environmental factors, such as humidity levels, as they can influence how often your hair requires moisture.

The type of style you are wearing may also influence how much and how frequent to moisturize your hair. Loose or open hair hairstyles like braid out or Wash and Gos need to be moisturized more frequently.

2. Low manipulation is key for 4C hair

Like we said earlier, 4C hair needs low manipulation to grow well. The unique and delicate curls need tender care.

Here are the key tips to maintaining low manipulation:

  • When detangling, do it gently. Use fingers or a wide-tooth comb to detangle 4C hair gently. Detangle when the hair is damp and coated with a conditioner to minimize breakage.
  • Limit the use of heat styling tools, as excessive heat can lead to dryness and breakage. If heat styling is necessary, use a heat protectant and choose lower heat settings
  • Opt for protective styles such as braids, twists, or buns. These styles not only reduce the need for daily styling but also protect the hair from environmental factors. A cute bun like the one below will be perfect.

With low manipulation, you will realize the following benefits:

  • Moisture retention: Low manipulation allows 4C hair to retain moisture more effectively. Frequent styling and manipulation can strip the hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness.
  • Length retention: The greatest benefit with leaving your hair alone is length retention. Allow your hair to rest in protective styles
  • Reduced breakage: 4C hair is more prone to breakage due to its tightly coiled structure. Constant manipulation, combing, or styling can lead to unnecessary stress on the hair strands, resulting in breakage and split ends

3. 4C hair needs regular deep conditioning

4C hair needs regular deep conditioning to thrive. Beyond moisture restoration, deep conditioning plays an important role in repairing damaged hair and improving the overall health of your hair.

When selecting a deep conditioner for 4C hair, prioritize products rich in nourishing ingredients like shea butter, argan oil, and proteins. Additionally, consider incorporating a steam treatment or utilizing a hooded dryer when deep conditioning. Steam opens up the hair cuticles, allowing the conditioner to penetrate more deeply and thoroughly.

To reap the full benefits, establish a consistent deep conditioning schedule. Aim to deep condition your 4C hair at least once every 2-3 weeks or tailor the frequency to your hair’s specific needs.

Being committed to regular deep conditioning not only revitalizes and strengthens your 4C hair but also minimizes breakage.

4. Prioritize a proper diet

For 4C hair to grow properly, you must take care of yourself from the inside. Don’t underestimate the impact of a nutrient-rich diet on your 4C hair.

Nourishing your body from the inside out supports healthy hair growth.

Include foods high in vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids, such as fruits, vegetables, fish, and nuts, to promote overall hair health.

5. Proper Scalp Care

Pay attention to your scalp. A healthy scalp is the foundation for thriving hair. Regularly cleanse your scalp, massage it to stimulate blood flow, and avoid excessive use of heavy oils that may clog hair follicles.

Use a gentle shampoo to cleanse your hair to avoid stripping the hair dry. Once in a while, go for a co-wash instead of a regular shampoo to give your hair a break.

The frequency of washing your hair will depend on your personal preference but a general rule is not to over-do it. Remember, during your wash there is some level of manipulation and we want to minimize that.

6. 4C hair needs gentle products

With an ever-growing market of hair care products, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with choices. 4C hair simply needs simple and gentle products.

Not all products lining the shelves are crafted with the unique needs of 4C hair in mind. Some can be downright harsh, stripping away essential natural oils and leaving your curls dry and prone to breakage.

With 4C hair, the simpler the better. A shorter ingredient list can be an indicator of simplicity and reduced potential for irritation. However, the golden rule remains: test before you trust. Each head of 4C hair is unique, and a patch test ensures that the product is what your hair needs.

Another thing to consider when selecting products for your 4C hair is your hair porosity. Go for lighter products if you have low porosity hair and go for heavier products if you have high porosity hair.

In conclusion,

4C hair simply needs simplicity and gentle care. Moisture, low manipulation, regular deep conditioning, a proper diet, scalp care, and gentle products are the key pillars for nurturing healthy and thriving 4C hair.

When you understand the specific needs of your hair and avoid excessive manipulation or harsh products, then you are on the right path in your hair care journey.
