why is my 4C hair so itchy

Hey there, 4C hair queens! Ever found yourself wondering, “Why is my 4C hair so itchy?” I’ve been in the ring with this itchiness problem for quite some time now, and let me tell you, it’s been a journey.

Armed with my own experiences and a curious mind, I have been in the trenches trying to find answers and remedies for my itchy 4C hair and in this article I will talk all about it.

Why is my 4C Hair So Itchy?

Your 4C hair is itchy because of one or more the following reasons.

1. Dry Scalp

A dry scalp is one of the most common causes of an itchy scalp in 4C hair. Given that 4C hair has a tight curl pattern, it makes it more challenging for natural oils produced by the scalp to travel down the hair shaft. As a result, the scalp can become parched and flaky. [1]

In addition, there are several other factors that cause a dry scalp such as drying hair products, age, weather, and serious skin conditions. As we age, our skin tends to be drier. The scalp is not left out in the mix.

Some products can also cause a dry scalp. Not all hair products are good for your scalp as some contain harsh chemicals that irritate and dry your scalp.

How to get relief

You combat dryness by adopting a moisture-rich hair care routine. Regular deep conditioning treatments, moisturizing shampoos, and leave-in conditioners can help replenish and lock in much-needed hydration.

There are lots of DIY hair masks to combat dry hair that you can prepare at home with natural ingredients from your kitchen. My favorite go-to mask is the banana and honey hair mask. I apply it once a week and it leaves my tresses smooth, glossy, and of course well hydrated.

2. Reaction to Products

Sometimes, the very products designed to enhance the beauty of our hair can trigger irritation. Ingredients like sulfates, parabens, alcohol, and fragrances may be too harsh for sensitive scalps, leading to itchiness and dandruff.

They strip the scalp of its natural oils causing dryness. Your scalp in its defense overproduces sebum leading to build-up and inflammation.

Consider opting for sulfate-free and natural hair care products. Experiment with different brands to get what works best for your hair type. Remember, your scalp will thank you for the extra attention to ingredient lists.

3. Tight Hairstyles

While those sleek, tight hairstyles may look fabulous, they can spell trouble for your scalp. I noticed that my scalp becomes itchier after getting protective styles such as box braids.

I had to let my stylist know and loosen up these hairstyles to reduce tension on the scalp. Opt for protective styles that don’t pull on the roots, allowing your scalp to breathe and heal.

Traction alopecia, a form of hair loss caused by excessive pulling on the hair, is a common side effect of tightly styled hair.

4. Reaction to Synthetic Hair Extensions

Synthetic hair extensions are a girl’s best friend as they give us a luxurious full mane. So, imagine you rocking your hairstyle in the office, or on a date and you suddenly feel like your scalp is itchy and you want to scratch it. How worse can it get?

This simply means your scalp may not be reacting well to the synthetic hair extensions.

Remember there are several chemicals used in the extensions, on application, and removal as well. FDA in the USA had banned these hair fibers due to numerous side effects such as, frequent allergic reactions, traction alopecia, Cyst formation, and recurrent infections. [2]

With the controversy over the safety of these hair extensions, extreme care and caution should be taken when wearing them.

Do not stay with hair extensions for too long to avoid hair loss and balding from the excess weight and pulling. Any time your scalp feels itchy, have them removed as soon as possible to avoid further damage to your hair.

5. Lack of Important Nutrients

Believe it or not, what you put into your body can impact the health of your scalp. A diet lacking in essential nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E, omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and biotin may contribute to an itchy scalp and dandruff.

Incorporate foods rich in these nutrients, such as leafy greens, nuts, and fish, into your diet. Additionally, stay hydrated to promote overall scalp health.

6. Product build-up

If you do not wash out leave in conditioners, and moisturizing products properly, then they end up building up on the scalp and eventually itchiness kicks in.

Normally after getting my 4C hair done, I tend to apply styling products such as gels and hair sprays. However, in the process of looking for well-laid edges and sleek styles, I sometimes end up overdoing it leading to product build-up on my hair. Whenever this happens, I get an itchy irritated scalp. After learning this I always use these products sparingly.

Having a balance in your wash routine is key, sometimes washing the hair too often leads to stripping it off natural oils making it dull. On the other hand, staying too long between washes is a perfect catalyst for itchy 4C hair.

Therefore, ensure you strike a balance on your wash hair routine as we all have different needs and preferences. Wash out any shampoo or conditioner thoroughly as this fosters a healthy hair growth environment.

7. Scalp Psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin condition that causes skin cells to build up causing injury to the scalp. Normally, new cells on the scalp take weeks to form. However, when suffering psoriasis, the cells form in a matter of days making it difficult for the body to shed these excess cells.

Research shows that a defective immune system could cause this condition as it attacks healthy skin cells and joints, leading to swelling and inflammation. [3]

Genetics play a role too, patients whose family members have been diagnosed with the psoriatic disease are likely to develop it.

It is characterized by:

  • Discolored patches
  • Dry, cracked, flaky skin
  • Severe itchiness
  • Burning sensation on the affected area
  • Bleeding if someone scratches the area
  • Temporary hair loss due to scratching

9. Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, non-infectious inflammatory type of eczema. [4]

Getting to the root cause of this condition is complex because there is a plethora of factors like an altered immune response, genetic disorders, or a deficient epidermal barrier. A characteristic feature is persistent itching of the skin that makes the scalp inflamed. Due to the constant itching, the area is easily infected from the open sores.

Ensure you speak to a medical doctor to get a remedy or relief from this.

Natural Remedies for an Itchy Scalp

Here are some natural remedies that have been used for centuries to provide relief from an itchy scalp.

PS: Always do a patch test before you fully commit to these natural remedies. This will ensure you rule out any possible side effects.

1. Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree Oil

2. Argan Oil

Argan oil, popularly known as liquid gold is extracted from the kernels of the argan tree in Morocco. It contains fatty acids and Vitamin E, which moisturize your hair and scalp and prevent breakage.

3. Peppermint Oil

Pepperming oil can help alleviate the pain and help you say goodbye to that dreadful itch on your scalp.  A study done on patients suffering from chronic scalp irritation showed the efficacy of peppermint oil in their treatment. [5]

4. Burdock Root Oil

Burdock Root Oil

Did you know that Burdock root has been used in North America, Asia, and Europe for hundreds of years? It is popularly used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to cure skin diseases eczema, psoriasis, and contact dermatitis. [6]

5. Apple Cider Vinegar

Organic apple cider vinegar has antiseptic properties that help reduce itchiness and soothe the scalp. However, it may also irritate the area since it is highly concentrated.

To avoid irritation and inflammation, dilute the vinegar with water in equal parts. You can apply the vinegar to the scalp two to three times a week. If you have any open wounds then avoid apple cider vinegar as it will cause more harm than good.
