The purpose of this article is to answer the first question. For more details on the second question check out the linked article on benefits of trimming hair.

Here is a summary on how often you should trim your hair;

  • Curly hair: Every 8 – 12 weeks
  • 4C hair: 3 – 4 months
  • Wavy & Straight hair: 6 – 8 weeks
  • Relaxed hair: 4 – 6 weeks
  • Colored hair: 4 – 6 weeks
  • Hair with split ends: 6 – 8 weeks

With that summary out of the way, now let’s get into the meat of this article.

How often should you trim natural hair?

How often you trim natural hair will vary with the natural hair texture.

In this section we will discuss the following natural hair textures: curly hair,  4C hair , straight and wavy hair)

4C Hair (Coily/Kinky Hair)

If you have 4C hair, you should trim your hair after every few months and this could be anything between 3 months to 4 months.

4C hair grows relatively slower than other hair types hence should not be trimmed too often if the hair is healthy.

If you find that your hair tangle and forms knots very often, than it’s an indication you should give it more attention including more regular trims to prevent split ends from spreading down the hair shaft and causing more tangles.

Here is a detailed article on when and how to trim 4C hair.

Curly Hair

How often should you trim curly hair?

Curly hair is more susceptible to tangles compared to other hair types. Because it tangles so fast, it’s recommended that you trim the hair after every 8 weeks to 10 weeks.

The frequency will also depend on how fine your curls are as well.

If it has medium curls anything between 8 weeks to 12 weeks will do. The split ends of curly or coily hair tend to curl faster and this leads to formation of knots on the hair which is something you want to avoid.

Straight/wavy hair type

If hair is wavy and heavily styled, it will need regular trims so that one can still maintain the original look.

Wavy hair will require more frequent trimming as opposed to straight hair because when the hair grows the style starts to become invisible if you don’t trim. You should trim wavy hair at least every 6 weeks.

For straight hair, 8 weeks is good enough for a trim.

How often should you trim relaxed hair?

If you have relaxed hair, you should trim it at least after every 4 to 6 weeks to avoid split ends.

You could also purpose to trim your relaxed hair every time you get a treatment.

The frequency will also depend on your hair growth speed as well as your hair texture. You should also remember to frequently moisturize the hair in between the trims to leave your hair healthy.

Relaxed hair or chemical treated hair is usually very fragile compared to natural hair. It therefore requires a lot of maintenance to prevent it from being damaged.

How often should you trim colored hair?

How often should you trim coloured hair?

Colored hair is very sensitive and requires a lot of maintenance to avoid damage. It tends to break easily because of the coloring agents that are used.

Therefore, it should be treated often and trimmed often as well. You should trim it whenever you go for your treatment to remove the split ends.

Colored hair is prone to have a lot of split ends because it is drier than normal hair. The fact that it is drier means that it is more likely to get breakage and split ends necessitating the frequent trimming.

How often to trim hair with split ends/ damaged hair?

If you have damaged hair, ensure you trim it after every 6 to 8 weeks so that you get rid of the split ends and maintain healthy hair.

Every type of hair can get damaged if not taken care of properly which is why trimming is necessary to prevent split ends.

You can easily tell if they have damaged hair if you have weak hair strands and split ends. A lot of things can damage hair including coloring, over manipulation and also chemical treatments.

Desired hair Length

Other than texture and the health of your hair, another important factor that will determine how often you trim your hair is desired hair length.

Since people have different preferences when it comes to their desired hair length, trimming frequency will vary as well.

If you want your hair to be longer you should reduce the frequency of the trim and wait for about eight to ten weeks. This will allow it to grow longer.

If you prefer shorter hair, then you should trim your hair every six to eight weeks. Both hair lengths need trims at some point to avoid split ends and damaged hair.

Conclusion

As explained above, people have different hair textures, types, lengths, hair growth and hair goals and all these will play a role in the decision.

Regardless of your hair texture and goals, at the very least, trimming your hair at least twice a year is highly recommended.  Learning your hair is great because you will know what your hair needs to remain healthy and at your designed length.
